My favorite ride to watch

I ride western and enjoy watching any horse perform. I watched the dressage videos and they are pretty to watch, but it doesn't look like the horse is happy to have the reins so tight and be so controlled. He is swishing his tail a lot. I don't know anything about the details of riding english but I have always felt sorry for the horses that have the bridle with the strap that holds their mouth shut when they are working. I feel upset with the riders when I see that because I think they have to use the bit so much that their ride won't be pretty unless they hold the horses mouth shut. I have always wanted to ask about this but felt a little stupid asking. I didn't want to take away from that thread but wanted to put this out there again. Some of you may have seen it on here before.
This is the ride that I most enjoy watching and I think this horse looks happy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wLikusmCEA
MHWF General Store

We have been playing around with an idea for a long time and maybe it's time to give it a try.

Our forum and website get a lot of traffic. We have had as many as 13,000 visitors in a single day. Why not use that traffic to help you and MHWF at the same time?

So here it is.....

You have something you are trying to sell. We have a website that gets a lot of traffic. Why not let us list your item for you here on our site? We list your item, you sell it and MHWF gets a 10% commission/donation. That 10% would also be tax deductible. If it doesn't sell, no commission, no harm done.

Cars, trucks, campers, ATVs, trailers, tack...you name it. Items must have a sale value of at least $250.00. There is no high end limit to the sale value, so higher priced items are equally welcome. No animal sales will be permitted.

If you have an item you wish to sell and are willing to donate 10% of the sale to MHWF for helping sell it, email us and we will be happy to work with you by listing it here on the forum as well as the MHWF website.

For a 15% donation we are willing to take possesion of the item you wish to sell and do the actual selling for you as well. That would include showing your item as well as listing it on Ebay and/or Craiglist. This would also include everything involved in getting your item sold, paid for and shipped.
We would hope that with a little success we could have a dozen or so items listed at any given time, helping you sell your items and making a nice donation to MHWF at the same time.

The "Unwanted Horses"

Just to be brief, I think, this subject should be brought up the the public, as a whole. Another front to bring it to is the Wisconsin Public Radio. I seem to be the only one who ever calls in to have this topic discussed.
Each time, (3), they seem so interested, but I have never received a call for more information, and have even given them the number for the MHWF, and Scott and Karen name as contact information.
I did get in again on Monday, and perhaps if more people called in and even emailed and ask for this topic, they would have a program. "Then". if they did, supporters would have to call in or email and give their views. I know the subject, is being brought up in Congress and some states, to review the closing of the slaughter plants.
A lot of people, even horse people, are for the slaughter plants. Last week, on WPR, someone was discussing the ecomony's affect on pets, and horses were brought up, but most animals like cats and dogs.
I have gotten in 4 ponies, and one weanling in the last 6 weeks. So that brings my total, to 13 horses, which I support, (with no job), and just wish I could do more.
Buffy
Extreme Home Makeover

I'm a lurker and was thinking that someone should nominate Scott and Karen for the show. They truly deserve it, I would but never being at the farm or meeting Scott & Karen in person, I'm not sure how accurate my application would be. I would be more than happy to do anything I can to help but as far as the app goes, I think someone who interacts with them and knows the property and can take video footage should be the one who submits the app.

It was just a thought, I truly believe they would win and deserve it.
Food Agression----HELP!

Has anyone ever had this problem? Say I had to ask him to move his hind end over...he 95% will lash out and kick (only while he's eating) He will literally stop eating to swing his hind end out and buck. Anyone have suggestions? I have worked with moving him totally away and letting me get to his grain and then letting him come eat and moving away and he excepts that, but I would at this point not be safe to clean his stall in the AM when he's eating... Some reasons I think may cause this to be more of a problem...I know I haven't shared much with you guys about him but this is my 6 month old foal..he is gelded....He had emergency surgery on his leg about 2 - 2 1/2 months ago and was on stall rest...then he got gelded and got an infection and the meds from that caused it to heal too fast and it burst on its own on one side that they couldn't reopen..and then he got weaned at 5 1/2 months because he's very independent and so on...but I feel bad because he doesn't have a buddy to rough house with and you know they buck and kick and feed time and he doesn't have anyone to do anything with...i know that's not an excuse for it but I'm just trying to give you some backround on him... I did try to bring my cousins older gelding to be his buddy but that didn't work out at all....the gelding wanted to just beat him up and kick him....I'm hoping in two weeks to try putting him back with the mare and I hope they are 100% weaned so he doesn't try drinking again and can have someone to hang out with....he is also out basically 24/7 in my round pen unless the weather is cold windy and rainy since he doesn't have a shelter in there.....any thought are welcome Ps- Its also scary because he's already 13 hh and almost 500 pounds and I want to correct this ASAP!

Thin horse

There is a place on the highway just outside of town that has two horses. I grew up in this town and have seen the one horse there for many many years. Probably close to 20 or 25 years. The other horse was added about five or ten years ago. The horses are across from the local high school. They are seen on a daily basis by many many people. They usually have a round bale of hay in with them and a big water tank. But the older of the two horses is skin and bones. I probably fell victim to not seeing it sooner because I always glance but never really look at the two horses. They have been there for so long. Now I am just sick everytime I see that poor horse. It has all this hay and I seen it eating the other day but it is still skin and bones. I am guessing it needs dental care and different diet considering the age. It probably has other issues too. I am so worried for the horse. I got my counties Humane Officers phone numbers and I am prepared to call. I am just worried that it will be ignored because the horse has hay and water. Any tips! This horse will doubtfully make it thru the winter with out help. I am angered that they will just let it starve to death cause that is what it looks like. I am also amazed that it is still there considering the amount of people who see this horse every day. I just keep thinking 'What do those horse loving high schoolers think of it?'

Biggest Loser Country Style

Exerpt from my blog I thought we could all relate too:

My sister was irked with me the other day because I fit into a pair of jeans that she has "outgrown". LOL She was furious because as she puts it, "I eat what I want and don't even have to exercise." I responded with the fact that I ride horses and she said that wasn't exercise, the horses do all the work. Hmmm.... perhaps I should put her on my horse and have her long trot down the road for 3 miles or so. HA! That is a good burn in the old legs, huh. So on Saturday when I woke up I paid more attention to the "exercise" I am not getting. It started with chores, I hauled hay and water to 2 paddocks and then worked a colt in the round pen for a while. Nope, no exercise there, so why was I so darn hot and had to take off my jacket? Then I threw hay down for the week and stacked it, exercise? I think not. Next I had two run ins to shovel out. Shucks, this can't possibly be exercise right? Then the husband asks if I am ready to start our wood hauling process. He had spent 5 hours cutting wood on Friday, so we headed to the woods to throw it in the wagon and haul it home. Climbing around on the hillside carrying logs to and from a trailer and then lifting them over my head to put in the trailer. Pfft! Nothing like exercise. When we finally got the loads home and unloaded (and throwing the wood off the trailer was NOT exercise) it was then time to split and haul it to the house to stack or haul it to the garage to stack. I must have made a million trips back and forth from the splitter. Five hours of wood hauling later I was disappointed to realize I hadn't even exercised yet! Then it was out across the 10 acre pasture and back to catch some horses that needed to have burrdocks picked out of their mane and tail. But that isn't exercise either, darn it. Because to some people, you aren't exercising if you aren't walking in place, going nowhere on a treadmill or stairmaster. I prefer my exercise regimen. I get to be outside, I get things accomplised AND I'm doing it with my family. Doing it "country style".

Have a great day!
