horse feeders
At one time, someone on here talked about bale feeders for horses and where to buy them. I know you can get a type at Farm & Fleet, but this was a different type. I did a couple searches but couldn't find the right thread. It could have been as long ago as a year. I really don't remember.
The place where I board my horse is now using bale feeders designed for cattle. My horse is rubbing his mane off from it,(right now he has one large spot that is completly bald) plus I don't feel they are safe for horses. I have also seen my horse put his head in and lift up the whole feeder
I know this site is dedicated to horses but thought you might want to post the following news and perhaps help save a few greyhounds too.

Many horse lovers are also doggy lovers, cat lovers, goat lovers, etc. and these guys could use some help.

I've never owned a greyhound before but they are such beautiful dogs.
I consider it an honor to find myself of the "help needed" email lists and would love to take them all but can't.

Dairyland Greyhound Racetrack in Kenosha, Wisconsin will be closing on December 31, 2009.

900 Greyhounds will need to be adopted otherwise they will be euthanized, now is a great time to consider adopting a Greyhound. They are great for an active family because they have been crated almost all their lives and they sleep about 18 out of the 24 hours a day.
Mini Donkey question

I have a 7 year old mini donkey- who is sick and we just can not get an answer as to what is wrong. Within the last 2 weeks he has become depressed- lethargic- not eating much at all and loosing weight. He does not hang out with his 3 horse companions much at all anymore. They all 4 usually get along great. No heard changes in the past year- nothing new or different. Nothing is showing up in bloodwork as I have had the vet here twice. He gets grass hay 3 times daily- Equishine- Omega Horse Shine and dewormed routinely. This is not a founder or anything like that- he was always of very good weight for a donkey- not obese. Now he is THIN!!!
Just looking to see if anyone has a sense of direction of anything else I should look at.

Thanks
Does anyone have advice for...?

I have a friend that wants my help in a few horse related areas, and I am just curious as to what others would do.

First of all she bought a horse that only neck reins. She is used to her old horse who plow reins, and her 4-h trainer has only taught plow reining. Is there any advice as to how to help her with this? I have a few ideas myself, but like i said would just like others advice incase mine falls through!!

Second of all, she likes to game. She is very confident for the most part, but a few years ago she fell off and broke her arm. She still has that thought in the back of her mine and sometimes has trouble having confidence in herself. Her dad and I encourage her to go the speed she feels comfertable at, but she wants to better herself, and I don't want to discourage that, but I don't want to push her. Your thoughts????
Older Horses

Ok I have a few issues with an older mare and I'm hoping someone can give me some ideas.
I have a 18 yr old mare. Star had good weight this summer. She dropped in weight when the weather got colder. She doesn't seem to want to eat much hay. She forages more than anything. She loves her grain and isn't dropping anything (I was told by the vet that it indicates her teeth need to be floated.). She is pooping good, no problems there. She just looks skinny again. UGH!!
When we got her 2 yrs ago she had Desi (her filly) by her side and was really thin. She was about 150-200 lbs underweight. She looked rough. No shine to her coat or anything. We tossed minerals, grain, ect at her to get her weight up. She gained weight but never fully bounced back. She dropped in weight when the weather got colder. I though maybe with it being colder she's getting cold. I blanketed her and she seems to eat more. She loves her blankie! Has anyone heard of this? I'm worried about when it gets -30 later this winter if she's going to be able to handle it? Will she have to be in a heated barn? The new barn isn't up yet! (She will have her own stall in the new barn.) Let me know of any suggestions. I'm afraid were going to lose her this winter. I'm going to worm her this week. She's on a rotation so its time. All my horses are fat except for this one.

Karen

He is a very good boy, pretty laid back and very easy going and respectful both on the ground as well as under saddle. he is great for the vet and farrier. He loads, leads and ties like a pro.
Trempealeau County Horses

Hi there: I was involved with the original rescue and have 2 horse here at my farm. Both of them are now riding horses and are used to the outdoor arena, the indoor arena and will go up and down our sleepy gravel road.

I spent many hours on ground work but Jamie Johnson has been doing the riding. She is very talented with timid horses. I will attach a couple of photos from August when she first started riding them. She starts them bitless and then later introduces a bit. She goes step by step slowly though all of the information the horses need. My timid Trempealeau horses love her.

I know the final stage of helping these horses is rehabbing the ones who are able to be ridden. This can cost quite a bit more than we would hope. But these were a great bunch of horses that I am happy to say are worth everyones time and effort.

You can learn more about Jamie Johnson on my website http://users.chipvalley.com/hayriver

Good luck everyone - I know you can all keep the progress going in the right direction.

Karen Lee
Hay River Equestrian
Boyceville, WI
Drummer

I am just stumped that no one is even "talking" about Drummer, what's up with that? She's beautiful, a nice size-tall but not too tall and she rides AND drives. Her history is well known by Scott and Karen, she's been well cared for and has no issues. She sounds about as perfect as they get. Is it because she's a retired harness racer?? Racehorses have seen it all, they are not spooky, they are unflappable. My OTTB has been the MOST tried and true horse I have ever owned, he's always the horse that will go first across or into something that other horses balk or hesitate at. Is it her age? She's in excellent shape, has been well cared for, has many years left of riding and driving. Most of our horses are over 16yrs old and they are the best there is. I know so many people with horses well into their 20's+ and still riding and doing great. Sorry to ramble, just don't get why she's being overlooked.

Brown Eyes

Hi I'm new to this. I'm Brown eyes former owner. This mare is not only beautiful her heart is even bigger. It broke my heart to part with her after 13 years but my health does allow me to ride her much anymore. And she deserves better, she is strong, healthy and loves the trails. She has taught me more than any of the many horses I have owned in my life time. In all the years I owned her she never failed me. She is wise on the trails and will alert you if there is a problem coming. Never crazy , she just lets you know...just watch her ears. I thank God I had followed Scott and Karen over the years because when the time came for us to part I would not sell her as I needed to know she would always be loved and cared for. That means Midwest Horse Welfare foundation. What would us old horse people do if we didn't have a place like MHWF? If your interested in Brown Eyes I will share all I know about her.
