This will be Ben's thread where we will keep any updates and/or new photos.

Date of arrival to MHWF:  3/7/2011

Ben is a 10 year old STB gelding. He is a big, strong and strikingly handsome boy who stands at 16 hands tall. Ben is a trotter and is broke to both saddle and harness. He has been ridden by both kids and adults and is in excellent shape with no health or soundness issues at all. Ben has been part of MHWF for a few years now and was recently returned due to a job loss. Someone is going to be very lucky to get this big beautiful horse that can do it all. It has been about a year and 1/2 since Ben has been ridden, so he might be a little rough around the edges, but he is a very experienced and trustworthy horse for riding and driving.

Here are some pictures of Ben from today, 3/7/2011.

Ok really, I didn't need to see this. He has been rode by kids and knows how to drive. After I took a sleigh ride with my neighbor I decided driving would be something worth learning and having a horse that can do it. I will have to show him to my sister.

*Ben* is a good lookin HUNK of horse! OMG!! I like his coloring, markings, SOCKS, and everything. His head just looks different/awesome, nose etc. Everything seems to be so well  marked throughout his whole body. 16 hands, how do you mount this big boy? Steps/stool!?

Ben has settled in really nicely already.  He comes right up to greet us in the pasture, and he already has a new best friend, Pepper (Piroska).  He is not a low man in the herd order but also not trying to be high up either.  Meaning, he isn't looking to be any kind of herd leader or anything, but he won't take any guff from anyone either.  I believe he will fit easily into the middle of any herd.

He looks like a horse you'd see in a Medieval times movie.  He's a jousting horse!

I agree!  What a noble look about him.  He is a very handsome guy!  I swore off those 16 hh horses, after I sold my 16 hh AQHA's, but he would be one to make me rethink my thinkin! (I can't do it) He would be an awesome sight galloping in the pasture, you can just feel the earth move can't ya?

I was wondering if anyone has had a chance to ride him since he's been back?  I am in the process of selling my paint mare for $700.00 and have selected another horse for quite a bit more, but would have applied and liked to have have come see Ben.

My APHA mare is 9 and has energy but I'm looking for something a little bit more laid back.  I don't like selling my horses to the first one who shows up with the $ because they are my pets and friends and I care about where they go.  I'm selling her for less than what I think she could bring but I'm hoping to find that special home for her.  There's nothing wrong with her, she needs neck reining work and a refresher, that's it.  I don't have the time right now is all.  SHe's a lover and gentle.

I will be applying in the hopes a well broke pony comes along for my 4 and 6 year old.  They both are always wanting to do things with the big horses and I think it's time they get one of their own to bond with and spoil :)

Ben just came back into the program on Thursday afternoon, so we have not yet had a chance to ride him yet.

As far as your mare goes, have you considered donating her an adoption program that can guarantee her safety as opposed to selling her and keeping your fingers crossed?

I agree with scott, donating is the way to go for sure. Especially since I just heard of a lady in WI working with a kill buyer to talk people out of thier horses, she calls and comes to see the horse, gives a sob story, has the KB pick up the horse and in return for scamming you out of your horse, she gets hay. Safer to donate under ANY circumstances unless it is a 10K horse you KNOW where it is going.

Kill buyers have been doing that for years.....send a friend or family member to look at a horse with a sad story only to ship it auction to auction or directly to kill.

I know the story, which is why every time I see a horse for sale low enough a kill buyer would want it, I suggest donating it to a rescue. Back on Ben, I think he looks spectacular and my experience with the standardbreds is that they are very solid, sturdy horses who dont spook easily and tend to be very healthy as a general rule. I worked for a guy who harness races and there were so many nice ones there but none that even came close to how pretty this boy is.

Therese, if you are determined to sell I would really consider increasing your price.  It at least improves the chance of a better home, although not necessarily.  Plenty of people have money and no brains and buy a horse without realizing what it takes to care for one, or they are the type to get bored easily, and what they don't use gets neglected.  Go to Fugly for all the horror stories.

Ben is very neat looking, and STB's are praised all over various forums.  He looks like a fairly easy keeper, too.  :)
