Piper - 5 yrs. $500 - Piper is a Percheron/QH cross mare. She is only 4 years old now, but will be 5 years old in a few weeks. She stands at 16.2 hands tall. Piper is super easy going and very well broke. She rides both English and Western, but most of her training has been English. She has also been on a few trail rides. Sounds and healthy and always well-cared for, this is a nice mare. For her young age, she is very mellow and easy going and is a pretty reliable mount who does not spook or shy and has never bucked bolted or reared that we know of. She leads, loads, ties and is good for the vet and farrier. This will be a great horse for someone who wants a trail horse or even wants to show in the local shows, jumping etc. While she is mellow and easy going with a lot of training, she is young and this is not a horse for beginner riders. Her adopter should have some time in the saddle. Attached Images:

She is awesome! We have a Perch/QH/Morgan cross. Very nice horses, usually pretty easy keepers, level-headed. Piper will make someone very happy. Especially someone tall or agile enough to get into the saddle! |

Piper is settling in really well and getting along great in the herd. Actually, on day 1 she made herself right at home and you would have never known she was "new".
Here is a pic of Piper from yesterday, 1/23/2012, having some fun out in the snow.

Why did she come in for adoption and not sold by the previous home? |

Because they cared about her future more than they cared about the money. That is why a lot of people choose donate their horses to MWHF and organizations like ours. If you sell your horse on the open market, anything can happen, and with the horse coming here they are under contract when adopted out and have a safety net to help ensure a safer future. |

Great answer to that question, Karen!! Thanks!! And my question to you is, why do you suppose the majority of the new horses settle in so easily? Do they instinctively know that they are safe with you guys? Piper looks wonderful and that is so great to see!! |

In this world we live in, it can be sometimes hard for people to grasp the concept that someone would turn away money to try and do something that is right and good for their horse, but we are lucky that we get to see so much good along with the bad in the world.
Kathy, it is pretty amazing that the majority of horses that come to us just seem to "get it" and settle in so darn quickly. I think it may be because of the attitude the herd gives off to a new arrival. They tend to just welcome them, maybe one or two will tell them that they are not going to be above them in the pecking order, but they are very welcome to stay as long as they like, and somehow ensure them that life is good. :) Sometimes I swear, if you listen hard enough, you can hear them say "you are safe, don't worry". ;) |

Wow! She is a beauty! Absolutely gorgeous! I totally understand why they didn't sell her, but rather donated her to MHWF! |

Does Piper stay the same color in the summer and winter? Is she expected to change color over the years? Just curious. |

No idea, but I would suspect she will gray out more as she gets older.
We did ride Piper this afternoon and she did great. I do not think she is going to be around long. :) Will share pics later when I have time. |

| She is really something special. What a beauty and I am looking forward to more pictures of course.
Stacie K. Do you know anything about how grays change color? The best color in my opinion is where she is at now with the beautiful dappled coat, but they do turn white most times. Some will get "flea ticking" which is really pretty too. I love a gray in tack, I don't think any other color looks as good as a gray (or white) in tack. (as my chestnuts groan...hehehe!!)
I will be very happy and very jealous of the person that takes this beauty home. |
