Stormy and I had our first "real" trail ride on the state forest trail today. We went out with Carol on Ruby, and a friend on her trail wize horse. We didn't do any round pen before we left. He was wonderful even when we went by the barn being built, screw guns, a boom going up and down...(Ruby was great, too!)
I am so choked up...it has been one year and four months for this day to come.
Goose bumps over here. To see you and Carol riding together in this photo, with Storm and Ruby....the whole story of you two finding each other again after so many years passed, and then having MHWF in common...the whole story, where Stormy came from and all you and him have accomplished in this time. Goosebumps. Congratulations just isn't enough of a word to sum all of this up. Just awesome Mel!!!!

I, too, have waited a long time for this day; my first "real" ride in eons, and I got to do it with my old riding pal from days (long) gone by (
i.e. high school). What a special ride it was and Stormy behaved beautifully, as did Ruby. The day, the weather, couldn't have been more picture perfect, and I can't imagine doing my first ride with anyone but Mel. It was a long time coming, but well worth the wait. And a huge "thank you" to our photographer, Jeff.

Goose bumps and happy tears too. Big smile here. This is a warm fuzzy isn't it.......
That is the picture of a lifetime! What a gorgeous pair of horses (and riders). I love how the two bays are such different colors. Way to go! (And you too, Jeff)!

Would either of you care to tell the story of Mel and Stormy here? Hopefully with a few pictures? It sounds like a good one, and I'm sorry to say I don't remember how this relationship happened. I tell a lot of people about MHWF, and this might be a good example of how you change the lives of both horses AND people. Faye
Both of you look great!! Yes, when a horse behaves so beautifully and has come so far as to trust you and look to you for direction, you know the work you put in has paid off. Who would have thought, in the beginning, huh? What a great pair you guys make, and adding Ruby was the icing on the cake. Good job on your training, Mel!
WOOOOHOOOO!! You guys look great! What an awesome job you have done Mel. congrats!!
Really nice pictures!! What a nice day it was..you both look to be really enjoying those wonderful mounts!!
Completly awesome picture and moment. Is it framed yet???
A thousand congrats coming from us on your special day.
Carol...How long since you've been riding?....you look like a pro!!!
Mel, you've done such a great job with Stormy. Great picture!
Carol's at about 30,000 feet right now, so I'll answer for her...until she can post...
It had been over 20 years when she got up on Sierra, and when she got up on Ruby she looked as if it had been yesterday! She was always a better rider than I was "back in the day" and still is!

Mel and Carol - I thought of you two often this week. It was a pleasure to meet you both and share in the start of your "reunion" week! I love the pictures and how awesome that you were able to share this with each other. I think Carol's smile when she was on Sierra and then the two beaming faces riding side by side says it all!!
Mel-Stormy and Ruby look fantastic, great job!
Carol-you look like you're having the time of your life! It was truly an honor to meet you two, I had such a great time and hope we can do it again soon. Hope your trip home was a safe one!

I am "home" again. We have company (my cousin and his wife are visiting from Washington state; they arrived about an hour before my plane landed) so this is going to have to be a short post as I'm getting yelled at to come be sociable.
I will post more later after our company is gone. Lori, I can't remember exactly how long it's been since I've ridden; I would guesstimate that the last time I was on the back of a horse for a very short ride in an arena had to be in the early 80's when I was in my late 20's. I haven't truly ridden since probably 1970-71! I had an awesome week and I still just can't stop smiling. I learned a lot from Mel this past week and to see her riding English on Stormy, knowing his history and the fact that he wasn't broke, knowing how hard she has worked this past year with that boy, well, I am just so proud of her and all that she has accomplished. It really is a dream come true for her and I know it's just going to keep getting better and better. I am so happy for her and Jeff!
Glad you got home safely Carol! Are you already trying to figure out when you can come back?
Carol wanted to come back for the EXPO...but is now in a big money saving mode working on putting herself in the position to adopt and board someday. Yipeee for that, big SIGH for not seeing her in Sept.
She is planning on coming on a road trip next summer with her husband. Jeff and I hope to accompany them down to MHWF. Haven't posted about Stormy much lately...we've been just playing around. Took some more lessons on him in our funny little "arena pen" a few weeks ago, but mainly been riding him with the bareback pad to work on keeping my balance AND hands quiet...don't have one of me doing that...but here's one of him. ( such a handsome kid)

Too bad Carol can't make the Expo, but it's a very good reason not to right?
Handsome is putting it lightly..........drop dead gorgeous would be a good term for him also.

I am so glad you posted that picture Mel.
That is my favorite picture of my favorite boy. He is drop-dead gorgeous and that picture shows him off to perfection. I am so proud of you, riding bareback -- you go girl! Yep, planning a big road trip for next summer. Just not sure exactly when and definitely will be coming through Minnesota first to pick your guys up before heading over to Wisconsin. I am super bummed that I won't be coming back in September for the Expo( sigh). I'm counting on all of you to post all about your fun times with tons of pictures of course. I am especially looking forward to hearing from the lucky bidder who ends up winning the Mark Rashid Package. I hope you will reveal your identify after the auction ends. I have a suspicion of who that might be and I'm simply dying to hear it from the Pony . . . I mean Horse's mouth!
He is just beautiful. I've always loved him. Glad to hear he's doing well.

What an absolutely, stunningly handsome boy he is!!! MAN - love that face. I just want to give him a big kiss on the beak!
Wow.. Mel.. What a pretty boy (& picture) too!!
