If you are fairly local to this area then I am sure you have been following the story that has been all over the news the past few days about the runaway horse that has been running loose in Portage County. We just received a phone call this morning informing us of this situation and asking if we could help out by taking her in, which we are doing.
This poor little thing has been running around neighborhoods for the past 6 days, tired and hungry and very scared. Last night authorities from the Portage County Humane Society, the Sheriff's Department and Dr. Johnson at Corriente Vet Service managed to tranquilize this little girl and get her back to the vet's office safe and sound. She was very scared and extremely tired, worn out and sore. Over the past 6 days many people have tried to catch her with no luck and she has sustained some injuries from her long ordeal, with her worst injury being a cut on one of her front legs, which happened when she ran through a wire fence about 4 days ago.
This little girl is now in the care of Dr. Gary Johnson at Corriente. Once she is ready to leave the vet, which will probably be sometime this afternoon, she will be coming here to the MHWF facility for the rest of her rehab and evaluation.
We are told this horse is about 2 years old and looks to be some sort of Arab cross. We are also told she was a pretty scared little thing after this long ordeal, but once caught seems very sweet and grateful for the help she is getting. We will keep you all updated on her situation and will post pics and info as it comes in.
We want to thank Marshall and the good people at the Portage County Humane Society as well as Dr. Gary Johnson at Corriente and all the people who worked so hard this week to get this little thing back to safety. We are glad to hear this story is going to have a happy ending.
In the meantime, if you would like to make a donation to this little girl's care...we would certainly appreciate it. Please also feel free to pass this along to friends, family or anyone else that may have been concerned with this little horse. Her rehab and issues with trust may be long term and we can always use whatever help we can get as far as help with the financial costs of her care.
Thank you everyone!!! Please follow the link to the local headline regarding our little Jane Doe.

| Runaway Horse Captured - Now In Vet's Care | | | | The horse has been seen many times along this road in the Town of Hull. |
| TOWN OF HULL -- A horse that has been avoiding capture and running free for nearly a week in Portage County is now in the care of a Plover veterinarian.
The horse was captured Thursday evening after Portage County Humane Society members and other officials tranquilized it.
The horse has eluded capture for the better part of a week, after showing up in the Town of Hull.
Many residents along Woodview Drive have seen the horse, but were unable to coax it in, despite apples and carrots.
The female horse is approximately 2 years old and is an Arabian mix. It has an injured left front leg.
A veterinarian is caring for the horse, and once it is released it will be taken to the Midwest Horse Welfare near Pittsville.
So far, nobody has called the Portage County Humane Society to report that the horse is theirs.
The humane society can legally adopt the horse out after 7 days.
It's likely that the horse will be at Midwest Horse Welfare until it has gained some strength and is medically fit to be adopted.

Its pretty easy to guess that this horse got loose somehow from wherever it was residing. It has obviously not been living out in the wild and has been scared to death being out and loose being chased and not knowing where to go. The owners are possibly not claiming it because of the expenses that have been incurred over this process but that is a guess. |

Pretty good guess there Cindy. That was what I was thinking as well. I can't wait to see what this little mystery girl looks like. I'm a sucker for an Arab though. |

It's always surprising how often owners don't claim their missing animals once they're found. You'd think it would be pretty tough not to claim a horse though! A dog or cat is one thing, but you'd think someone would recognize that the horse belongs to a neighbor or friend. |

| #10 | We decided we would throw a quick webpage together to see if we can provide updates on this situation as well as the situation from a month or so ago that was also in this area, plus hopefully generate some money to help these two horses out. Please take a few moments to visit this new page and read about this situation. Please also pass along the webpage to anyone and everyone you can. Your help is needed and we are counting on all of you to help us with this.

| #15 | How is that little Jane Doe doin' guys? A huge sigh of relief went up when we heard she was captured and coming to MHWF cuz to quote Carly Simon (I think) - Nobody does it better!! I'm hoping no one comes forward to claim her so her future is secure. How could anyone let this happen and not even miss this gal? It's baffling to me but then again - we picked up a horse at our local dump a few years ago.......what a world! |

| #16 | Hi everyone! It is going to take us a while to catch up on the forum and computer work and pictures and all, as we spent the whole day outside with the horses today, but I will be posting some pictures of little Janie Doe soon, as well as Stormy.
We are calling Jane Doe, Janie for now until her real name strikes me. She looks to be a Standardbred cross, and I quite honestly do not see any Arab in her as had been mentioned somewhere in the press. I am wondering if she escaped from an Amish farm. Interestingly, she was fairly easy to catch last evening after arrival in the round pen, and there was a lot of activity around and she was very interested in everything. I think she was still somewhat in a state of just not knowing what was going on. This morning she wanted no part of being caught (and thank-you Dr. Johnson for leaving the catch-lead on her!). I spent about 4 hours in the round pen with her until I could consistently catch her every single time I asked today. The first hour was me just sitting in there until she got used to my presence. She finds me to be quite an interesting character. She is a very sweet little filly, but certainly has been through a lot of trauma and that is certainly showing, and she is quite head-shy. After cleaning her wounds this evening she once again did not want to be caught, so more time needed to be spent. We will get that trust soon and she will realize that we are helping her. She is staying in a small paddock situation through her recovery period. Her front leg is still pretty swollen where the infected wound is, which is being treated and she is on antibiotics, but the two wounds on her hind end are looking pretty good.
We need to get some supper into us before we can work on getting the pictures uploaded, but we'll be back soon!
These horses thank you ALL from the bottom of their huge hearts! Thank you so much everyone! And a huge thank-you to Rick and Nancy Merkel for running at the drop of a hat to go pick this little girl up at the clinic and deliver her to our doorstep. You guys are all awesome!

| #19 | Poor thing! I don't believe there are any Amish farms close to that area but someone must know where she came from although she may have traveled a distance. I'm betting you will get some leads but whoever the owner was, they don't deserve to get her back anyway. Your good groceries will make a world of difference in Janie in a very short time (along with kind hands and hearts!) |

| #20 | Considering the whole story and condition of this horse (physically and mentally), I do tend to doubt anyone is going to step forward and claim ownership. Although we don't charge for the hours and hours in the next days and weeks that are being put into little Jane Doe (not to mention the food and medications), etc., I would imagine there are some other pretty big bills racked up out there that they probably would be charged for. That is just speculation on my part...
We are going to let Mista be little Jane's buddy (of course after quarantine period). Mista has a way and an aura about him that seem to calm the wildest of fears in any horse that has been in a bad situation. Mista played an integral role in bringing Smokey around to trust people, and I am sure he can do the same for little Janie. We will continue our work with her as we do in cases like this, but Mista will help tremendously and he graciously accepts this task. Even though Mista loves his pasture and is a big part of the harmony in the herd, he doesn't mind being pulled out of his pasture to help be a buddy for a horse who needs to be paddocked up here, and he always enjoys the loads of extra attention he gets from people while he is up here.
We will certainly keep everyone updated on little Janie's progress, and thank you all again. |

Little Janie Doe would just like to thank you all again for all of your support and for caring about her.
She is still very unsure of everything and we spent a lot of time with her again throughout the day today. She is beginning to figure out that she is safe and doesn't have as many worries. We were even able to pick off a bunch more woodticks from her today.
I did have my camera out with me for a while today and took some pictures while Scott and I took turns spending time with little Janie, and also a couple of Kathy spending time with Stormy. I will get to those soon and get a couple posted for everyone.
Thanks again everyone!!! |

| #22 | A few snapshots from today (Sunday, 04/29/07).
Here are a couple I quick snapped while Kathy was spending some time with Stormy. Stormy is starting to come around and enjoy being around people very much, allowing people to touch her head now.

I managed to snap a few shots of little Janie Doe today as well. Scott and I took turns today with her and we really made some progress today. She now will approach as we walk up to her area instead of retreat, which is a really nice thing to see. The front leg is not nearly as swollen today as it was yesterday, so things are looking up. That is a nasty wound and we are treating and watching it carefully. It was nice to be able to pick off the rest of the ticks on her today as well. Here are a couple of snapshots from today.

It may look like Scott is saying "open your mouth and say ahh", but I think little Janie is telling him something about his smell.

But they came to a mutual agreement that neither one smelled too bad.

Thanks again everyone. We will keep you updated on little Janie's progress. |

What a beautiful little gal. I'm glad things went better today! She will soon learn that you guys are wonderful. (With Mista to help her too...I just finished reading your new journal entry, Karen.) And Miss Stormy...Wow, does she look wonderful compared to her first pictures!! She has come a long way. Looks like she and Kathy are good buddies! Thank you so much for taking in these two horses who desperately needed you. |

Both Stormy and Janie look extremely happy to be in their new home. I can't imagine how terrified poor little Janie must have been as she was loose. Poor little girl. And of course there is no way of knowing how much contact she had before that even. I know she'll come around in time with all of your great work. |
