| #76 | I'm impressed with the progress you're able to make in such a short period of time. Keep up the great work! Horses like these deserve a second chance and, obviously with some effort can make incredible recoveries.
Thank you Scott and Karen for being there for them.
I hope your assistance with Janie doesn't result in more horses being released or "dropped off" at your farm in the coming months. If folks see you successful with Janie is there a risk that others will follow their lead? Will horses running through the streets become more commonplace? I hope not. |

| #77 | Hi Kris,
Regarding your concerns about horses being "released"....no, that is absolutely not a concern whatsoever, at least not around here; not something that we worry about in the least bit. Janie was not "released" by anyone, I urge you not to put assumptions if you don't have answers. From what I can see, Janie had escaped from where she was at, she had been hard to handle, and the folks did not come forward for her, probably in fear of the liability and huge bills and other things they would have to pay. I highly doubt that horses running through the streets is going to become commonplace. In risks of turning this thread away from Janie, sorry, I just have to ask, where did you come up with this idea?

| #78 | I had actually heard of another case of this in northern wisconsin recently. I was at my riding instructor's this week and we were talking about Janie and she mentioned another case she had heard about. That's why I asked about the possibility.

I hope I can put anyone's fears at ease, as this is a very rare occurrence, and I really hate to have any rumors or sensationalism running rampant, in the "he said she said" kind of thing that tends to happen when there is an odd case like this. Maybe the next time you see your riding instructor you could tell her that Janie was not "set loose"...I would appreciate that to help squelch any rumors that may be going around. Yes, horses do get loose once in a while, most times they don't get too far, but sometimes they do travel. Most owners do come forward when that happens. I would imagine that once in a great while you will find that someone just does not want to come forward for whatever their reasons may be in a case like this, the expense, etc., but this certainly isn't a "common" thing at all. |

| #81 | I wanted to let you all know that our friend who is helping us with her time and expertise with training issues for Janie and Stormy has arrived safe and sound, and is spending time with Janie right now as I type. I just took a 10 minute break from work here and talked with Deb for a few minutes, and things are going very well. Janie has so many fears, but she is already wanting to come up to Deb, so this is a great thing. I will eventually take my camera out after work and grab a few shots to share with you all. Deb will be with us until Monday, so we will get a lot accomplished over the next 4 days and will share updates with you all here.
Thank you again everyone, your help support through this means the world to these horses and to us. |

| #83 | Well, I know there was another thread with updates on Janie, but this was the one that was easiest for me to find to share a couple of quick pics from yesterday. Janie is loving our company and really loves to go out for little walks. She still has a very high flight response that is fairly easily set off, so we have to be very careful with her, but she has come a long, long way and is doing great!! She is overcoming her fears from all of the trauma that she has been through like a real trooper.
Here Janie posed for a pic yesterday:

You can see she is shedding out all of that unhealthy looking hair and getting a real shine to her, as well as filling out nicely. She is healing up beautifully from all of her bumps and scrapes and cuts, and the two wounds on her butt are healed nicely with the shaved hair growing back in black. The huge wound on her front leg that was swollen and infected upon her arrival has completely healed and it looks like there will not even be a scar from that...quite amazing.
Oh boy, wait till Janie finds out Scott was giving her the bunny ears in this one!

| #85 | Wow! Super pictures of Janie and Scott! She does look better than day 1 that's for sure; but, I agree with Karen; I don't see any Arab in her at all. All we have are Standardbreds and she kind of looks like a Life Sign or No Nukes filly. You can tell alot by the head of a Standardbred. This is a perfect instance of when you wish they could talk. I would love to hear her story!! Any reports of barn fires up that way where she may have panicked and gotten lose and just ran and ran? Just had a barn fire down here at the Morrison Fair grounds and a barn burnt down killing a Quarter horse that was trapped inside. To think we came real close to boarding our 2 yr old racing fillies there! One of the racehorses in the barn next to it panicked in his stall and was injured so I wonder if she got into a bad situation and wound up in a barn fire, panicked and got hurt. I will be sending a donation this coming weekend for help with her recovery. Best of luck with her; she is lucky to have you two! |

Thanks Deb! She does look like a STB, doesn't she?! Actually, we're pretty sure we know where little Janie came from, and from the sounds of it escaped out of a pasture where she was for "training". She apparently was sold at an auction, went to one owner who could not handle her, then off to someone else who also could not and this second person was going to give her away. When the third party arrived at the second parties farm to get Janie, she had escaped from the pasture...and so goes the saga. It has been hard to completely prove all of this and these parties do not want to come forward and be responsible for any of it, but we're happy that Janie is here with us and will eventually find a great home. I'm so sorry to hear about the tragedy with the fire also Deb, our condolences to everyone involved.

I forgot to add one big thing that little Janie has learned and takes with a grain of salt now. Scott introduced her to the spray bottle and she stands very nice to be sprayed with anything from the bottle (such as fly spray). What a good little girl she is! She is really smart as a whip. |

| #91 | Just a quick pic update tonight on Janie. I grabbed my camera for a minute while we had Janie in the round pen tonight stretching her legs and playing. Seems like she changes a little bit almost daily. You can see the pictures of Stormy previously on this thread and the huge transformation that she made, and now you can see Janie is making a very big transformation herself (you will have to click on page 1 and 2 of this forum topic to see the other pics). She is just beautiful! We lead her around with good confidence (no peafowl flying around hopefully ) and even have other people lead her around too. Randy (MHWFs President) led her around the yard while I was cleaning her stall last night and she did perfectly with Randy. The wound on Janie's front leg is completely healed and it isn't even going to leave a scar! The wound that was in her "armpit", which caused an abscess to form on her chest back a while ago, is also completely healed and Janie is feeling FANTASTIC with no lameness/soundness or health issues whatsoever, and is really starting to grow and fill out with muscles. She has come a very long way since arriving here on 04/27/2007!!
Well, here's Janie:
