| #1 | This is something we probably should have started a long time ago. So we are going to start today.
This thread is going to be updated every day, by either myself or Karen and what it is going to be about is just our day, what's going on with the program, us personally in regard to the program and how we spent our day, besides our normal work schedules.
So here we go....day 1:
Yesterday was an interesting day. We got up early, got chores done, then Karen came in to start her work day and I went out to mow the lawn. We got a new zero turn mower last year, so lawn mowing went from over 3 hours to just over 1/2 hour now...nice. Dumb me, I brought one of the phones out with me and put it in one of the cup holders on the mower so that Karen wouldn't get disturbed if it rang while I was outside. Somewhere the phone fell out of the cup holder and after an hour of searching for it, we gave up. No idea how a big silver phone could disappear in our own yard, but it's gone. No biggie I guess, we have 4 other handsets for it, but frustrating still.
Ok, lawn is mowed, had to bring in the mail. There is always a good hour or so of paperwork etc. to do when the mail comes. Got that done. Karen kept on working and I managed to hop online for a while and get some of my website work done.
We had a vet appointment scheduled for noon, plus, plus.....not sure what that means...hehe, but the vet, Dick, showed up at around 1:30. We started with Chocolata, did bloodwork on her, palpated her, the did the ultrsound. next up, teeth floating. We floated a few of the horse's teeth then called it quits. It got really hot out and with me being under the weather, I had had enough. Came inside, caught up on emails then laid down for an hour or so. By that time Karen was done with work and she rested for an hour or so as well.
Chore time....did chores, looked for the phone one last time then came in and showered and got ready to go look at a camper in Wisconsin Rapids. A family member wants a 5th wheel camper and we want a bumper pull, so the idea of a trade has been thrown around. Nothing set yet, but will probably happen.
Anyway, got back in at around 10:30 last night, both of us worked an hour or so to make up for some of the time we lost during the day, then we watched American Idol and Deadliest Catch on the DVR. By then it was just a bit after 1am and time to go to bed.
Got up at 7 this morning and did chores, I ran to pick up the waterers and came in to work. So here we are, still a little under the weather and kind of tired today. We will proabably do chores tonight then try to take it easy and see if we can get healthy again.
The only real news here other than the waterers being here and paid for is the diagnosis on Chocolata. It is as we suspected. She has one ovary with some abnormal tissue on it and it is almost certainly what is causing her problems. She is always in heat, has a hard time maintaining or gaining weight and can be downright difficult and acts studdy. These are the signs of a horse with a tumor or cyst on her ovary and the ultrasound confirmed it. This is not normal for her. Her hormones are making her life miserable and it is a no brainer, those ovaries need to come out.
The surgery is going to take place in Oconomowac as soon as we figure out where the funding for that is coming from and as soon as we can get her down there. Assuming there are no complications and we can get a deal on the hauling to get her down there and back once they release her, we are expecting it to cost somewhere over $1500.00 but under $2000.00. This just isn't something we can ignore or leave her to deal with. They have to come out. Putting her down (she's only 5 year old, sweet and broke to ride) is not an honorable or respectable option. The only respectable option in our eyes is to suck it up and do the right thing by this horse. With the surgery, Chocolata can live a life comfortable in her own skin and will be a sweet little Paso mare with a long healthy life ahead of her. So the course of action with her is clear. There will be some serious thought in the next few days as to how to get this done, but the choice to do what we can for her has been made and we feel pretty good about it.
So for now we are both back at work with a few hours to go. A nice laid back night will be nice. And oh yes, Dakota and Janie leave for their new homes this Saturday!!! They will both begin the 3rd and last chapter to their story this weekend! We will miss them both, but they will be in good hands and we are happy to see this come full circle for them both. That's what this program is about, horses like Chocolata, Durango, Janie....they all have a very special story. Now Baby Cakes and Gracie can begin to take the second step in their long journey as well.
Take care and to be continued......
See the new wateres? Thank you to everyone who pitched in and got these paid for!! Now, the rest of the way to get the installation done.

It looks to me like Scott said one of us would update this every day, so I guess I better get on it here. I hope this doesn't get too boring.
Today was a pretty typical day with nothing really out of the ordinary. The horses seemed to enjoy the cooler weather today compared to the heat and wind of yesterday.
I did find out that the person I nominated for the "Random Act of Kindness" Award through the Midwest Horse Fair did not win. I was very disappointed to see that, but happy that the person who won was able to give someone a ride on her Friesian at the Fair and make that person's dreams come true. The prize was a new saddle worth about $7000.00. I had nominated Mary Hetzel from St. Francis, not only for the hundreds of random acts of kindness I could name off that I've witnessed, but because her whole life is one random act of kindness after the other, and she really deserves recognition for her kind heart and soul.
I also found out that a horse that was loose in a state park in Iowa was captured by a rather odd person who seems a bit delusional about the whole situation, and am disappointed that no one else was able to intervene in the meantime. I worry for that horse's safety and well being from hearing about horses on his property dying over the winter "because of bad hay", amongst other worries, but worrying isn't going to help anyone and there is nothing that I can do about it.
We did have a TB named Dandy (Dan is the name he is used to) come in to MHWF late this afternoon. Dandy is already a part of this program, has been in his adoptive home for close to 2 years now. Dandy returned in excellent shape and we hope to find him a good home very soon. We will get him listed with his profile and some photos tomorrow some time. Dandy stands about 16.2 HH and it sounds like that size was a bit intimidating for some of the less experienced riders that his adopters had him in mind for out on the trails. He is a really wonderful horse and we are very excited to be offering him up for adoption to some lucky person.
I am excited to see how well the apple trees have bloomed! We will have a bumper crop of apples again this fall. The horses will sure love that. It has been nice to see all of the honey bees around too.
Tomorrow (Friday) will be an interesting day with the person coming to give the estimate on the installation of the auto-waterers. I'm anxious for that, and also I am going to try to get to the Fairgrounds to watch some of the Mustang give-away. I'm not sure that I will be able to swing very long at the fairgrounds with work and other things, but I will try to get there for a bit.
Chocolata continues to do very well. I am thinking of ideas to raise money for her surgery, and will definitely be making some nice photo cards to donate and still working on a few other ideas as well. Looking forward to Saturday, which will be a very busy day! Horses to ride around here, photos to take, and a visit from Kellie and Scott M. who are delivering the trailer load of goodies including Chaffhaye that a very kind-hearted person from Illinois donated.
I will end with a photo. I snapped this yesterday of the sweet Tina hanging out in the pasture. We willl report in tomorrow with the news on the installation for the waterers.
Here's a snapshot of Tina

P.S. I also went to the chat or blog sections of the Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune, the Marshfield Herald, the Stevens Point Journal and the Wausau Herald and got the information about MHWF and the Animal Rescue Site Shelter Challenge posted on all of them. I hope to see a #6 spot in the next day or 2! |

| #4 | Wow, Sunday morning already?
Yesterday we had a lot going on. The plumber finally showed up and gave us an estimate for trenching the water lines and electric for the auto waterers. His total was exactly twice what we were expecting, although he just gave me a ballpark figure and is mailing the actual bid this week.
About the time I was done with the plumber, the people who adopted Janie and Durango arrived to pick them up. Instantly it went from a beautiful sunny morning to pouring rain. Janie and Durango loaded without incident, but we got drenched to the bone. I am sure Karen will be posting picks real soon. WE got a call last night saying that both horses made the 10 hour drive with no problems and they were in the pasture eating and checking out their new place.
The plan yesterday as to test ride a horse or two after chores were done and Durango and Janie were loaded up and on their way to their new home, then get some new pictures of a few of the horses for the website, but the rain kind of killed that in a hurry.
Karen H showed up, along with Brian S, as well as Holly and Felicia T. Felicia and Holly brought donuts and we all pigged out while we waited for the rain to break....never really happened. So the girls all hung out in the barn and cleaned up a few saddles that will be in the next fun auction. I have to admit, the saddles came in so dirty that we figured they were pretty much old and used up. After seeing them cleaned up, we were shocked at how new they were and what nice saddles they were. Get your bidding fingers ready, a few of you will be finding some pretty nice saddles on this next fun auction.
Everybody finally had enough of the weather and went their separate ways. Karen and I came in the house, showered and spent a couple hours cleaning the house and doing laundry...something we had not had a chance to do in about 2 weeks. The house was filthy and although cleaning was not what we felt like doing yesterday, it had to happen.
We got done cleaning at about 5pm or so and Scott and Kellie M. showed up. They went down to Illinois for us yesterday and picked up a trailer load of donated items. There are some very nice items in that load! Thank you Scott and Kellie for all the hours of driving you did for us yesterday! We unloaded their trailer and all piled into our minivan for dinner at Fannies. Being as tired and hungry as we were, I know I can speak for myself, I ate a little too much a little too fast and we just came home and flopped onto the couch. It was now about 9:30pm and we were spent.
We are still dragging a bit yet this morning, but are doing a little computer work and will head out to do chores in a little bit. No real plans for the day, probably just going to take it easy since we both have to work tomorrow. At least the sun is back and it looks like it's going to be a nice day. Maybe we will take a drive out to the lake and let the dogs swim after chores this morning.
Thanks for reading and talk to you all soon. |

| #5 | I know it's Tuesday, but Monday sure did not feel like a holiday and today sure seems like a rainy Monday to me. But, at least we are warm and dry and right back to work this morning.
Sunday we took it real easy and spent most of the day out at the lake with Bella. Kathy and my mother came out to keep us company and we sat around the fire, cooked, had a few drinks and just kicked back. We came home around 7 or so that night and watched a little TV before going to bed early.
Monday was a work day for us both. I had to work a short day and Karen had to work a full day. Pretty much the same routine as any other day, work for a few hours, do chores, come back in and work the rest of the day, chores again..heehaw....then took it easy and hung around the yard pretty much.
We did sent someone out to go have a look at a few of the adoption horses. In one home so far we found the horses to be in terrible shape and have begun action in getting them back here. When this happens, to say it makes you angry is an understatement. It's infuriating. We can assure you that these horses will be back here soon and we will go from there. We will post updates as things progress, and they should fairly quickly.
Please do not forget that if you have adopted horses from MHWF, Health Report time is running very short and we need those here with your signature as well as your vet's signature and a photo by June 15th. That's just about 2 weeks away and we need every adopter to take them seriously and get them in on time.
If all goes well I will be getting the fun auction put together and rolling either today or tomorrow. I hope we have a lot of bidders out there because we have some great stuff this time around and a few big ticket items as well. Hopefully this last fun auction will take the program the rest of the way out of debt and will allow us to concentrate on health reports, the waterers, the supporter appreciation night and Chocolata's surgery. It would be a wonderful thing to come out of June out of debt with Chocolata back from surgery and automatic waterers installed. Maybe a pipe dream, but we are going to work hard to get all that done in the next few weeks.
Off to the post office I go, then back to work, chores and hopefully working on the fun auction tonight!!
Take care everyone...hope you all had great Memorial Day weekends!

| #6 | Well, the fun auction didn't start on Wednesday night like we had hoped. After almost 14 hours of taking photos of the items and writing descriptions, I finally had enough a little after 10 pm. Got right back to it in the morning though and had the fun auction up and running by 10 am on Thursday. If you have not yet checked out the fun auction, consider taking a look. There is a huge variety of items on this one and some big ticket items as well.
http://www.equineadoption.com/funauction.htm
THursday was a pretty busy day. We got up, caught up on emails etc, went out and did chores, came back in and worked until a little after 3, then had to run quickly to the bank and grocery store and hurry back because we had a horse coming in and an appointment to show another, plus Steve F. was coming to show us Java Deck.
We went outside at around 4pm and everyone showed up at the same time, so it was kind of hectic at first, but eventually it all worked out great and we took in the new horse, found Malacy a great new home and had some time to meet with Java Deck and his new family. Did chores quick and came back in at around 6:30 or so.
Since the sun was shinning and we had some daylight left, instead of working or mowing the lawn, we decided to take a run out to the lake and spend a couple hours out there. Got a fire going, got a fishing line in the water, grilled some burgers and hot dogs, ate, fished and made it back here by 9pm in time to return a few quick phone calls.
At 9:30 we hopped back online and got the day's paperwork for the program done, added the new horse, Lucy to the site and marked Malacy as adopted. Karen posted some pics of Java Deck on the forum and I updated the fun auction and caught up with a few more emails. By the time we got done online it was about 11pm and we watched a little TV before going to bed.
This should be an interesting weekend. We have no appointments scheduled as of yet until Sunday morning. We almost never have a Friday night and a Saturday morning off from the program, and other than chores and the regular Saturday things we have to do for the horses, if the sun stays out, we might have a pretty relaxing weekend.
Of course, the mortgage has to get paid today and the lawn has to get mowed, but once we are done with work for the day....wh knows....no plans for the weekend or even the night yet.
Thanks for reading! Keep on voting in the contest and bid, bid, bid on the auction!! |

| #7 | I think we are going to keep it short today....long day and we are tired. Supper is in the oven.
It seemed like yesterday was a never ending pile of paperwork and phone calls that to be honest, got a little old as the day wore on. We got through it though and even found a few minutes to go toss a line into the water and see if we could catch a fish or two. We needed a little time away from the phone and computer. I caught a few Bluegills and a couple Largmouth Bass, we let them go, grilled some burgers with Karen's sister Sandy and came home.
Today was like any other day, got up, did chores, answered a few emails and started our work day. The workload, at least for me today, wasn't as bad as yesterday, which was nice because it gave me some time to speak with the Sheriff's Dept in a couple of counties and some time to get a few things done with the attorney today. There are a few adopters out there, only a few, that probably won't like what's coming their way. The Board for this program has decided it's time to clean a little house on a few situations that are long overdue. We apologize for some of the content on a post or two on our forum, but in that particular situation we felt it was what would get the adopter's attention. Sometimes what works isn't always fun or even what it seems on the outside. But, the goal is always to do right by the horses in this program and sometimes that means having to do something out of the ordinary. Action has begun in these couple of cases and while those couple of people think we are the bad guys, they are the ones wasting prgram time and efforts which would be much better spent on other things. There is always some joker who thinks the contract they signed when they adopted is nothing more than a piece of paper. It reality it is a contract and they are bound by it legally. We have always and will always see that through to the end. We have never lost a horse in the state of Wisconsin and won't here either. These are actually pretty simple cases and the contract holds up in the court every time. Our suggestion to these couple of people is to simply live by your contract and there would be no reason for this program to single you out..plain and simple.
Other than that, a pretty normal day. Finished with work for the day...did afternoon chores, had an appointment to show a horse tonight, came back in, made a few more phone calls and here we are...typing this while we wait for supper to come out of the oven.
Health report forms are streaming in steady now....thanks everyone! Plans for the get together on the 27th are going well. We are getting wonderful cooperation with the Sheriffs Depts. we are working with, and we are down to the final few hundred dollars for the automatic waterer fund. Maybe, if we can collect the the rest we will have them in before the gathering on the 27th and before the hot season really kicks in. You guys are all kicking butt in the voting contest and things are going pretty well for the most part.
Something I know we have said in the past, but it is confirmed every day by all of you, we have some of the best supporters around...no doubt. Through all we have been through in the past almost 9 years now, the good, the bad and everything in between, our support from you has only grown and we would not be here without ALL of you...we truly mean that and appreciate you all more than you know and more than we often find the time to tell you. Many, many of you we call true friends and that is true....not only a friend of this program, but personal friends as well. So if even though we do not have a lot of time on a daily basis to let you all know individually, we consider many of you dear friends and crucial parts of this program. Some of you probably don't even know how much we appreciate you on a personal level, but we do and will always do our best to help and support you like you have always done for us.
Have a good night! Thank you!

| #8 | Looks like we skipped a few days.....actually, it was so nasty, cold and wet outside that there just wasn't much to report. We had a pretty laid back weekend.....get up each morning, answer a few emails, do our morning chores, back in to answer a few more emails, then spend a big chunk of the day doing nothing other than listening to the rain beat down on the roof of the house and finding the couple spots where the roof leaks. We did manage to run into Marshfield on Saturday afternoon to get some Chinese though. Came back home, chores again, then sat around and watched TV most of the weekend. Both Karen and I had to work a few hours each day over the weekend as well, so with the rain, some work to do and not much else going on, it was kind of a lazy weekend.
Oh yes, Christal the ASB mare came to us on Sunday morning as well. Hop on the "Adoption Horses" page and have a look. Don't let her age scare you, she's in the shape of a 5 year old...seriously. A VERY nice horse.
Yesterday was Monday already, pretty much a normal day other than we had to cut out of work a little early and had to go into town for a few hours on business. Stopped at the local greasy spoon on the way home, did chores and watched I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here before passing out at around 11:30.
With all the drama lately, we did get some good news last night that caught us totally off guard, Petfinder called at around 8pm last night to let us know that we were the weekly winners of the online voting contest for the most votes by any organization for the week. That's $1000.00!!! Karen and I can only vote once a day, so you know what that means....you guys did that! Your hard work and votes already earned this program $1000.00 and there is a lot of contest to go. There is no rule saying we can't win that every week!Way to go! That really caught us off guard last night and the timing couldn't have been any better.
The fun auction ends on Wednesday night too! Please don't forget. There are still some excellent deals there to be had. If anyone ever wanted a really expensive leather coat but didn't want to fork out the cash, have a look at the one on the auction. It's a lot more coat than the photos show. You will not be disappointed, that much we can say. Plus, the 3 remaining saddles are all still a screaming deal. All 3 of the remaining saddles are still well below their value, especially when you consider that the shipping is already included and a couple of them are heavy!
So today is Tuesday already, we have the Digger's Hotline coming out to mark for buried cable....and guess what...the auto waterers probably go in this week! That's right! We are still quite a bit short of our goal financially for the waterer fund, but we had to take advantage of the time this person was available and their rate if we did this right away. So we are moving forward with the waterers, but could still use some help in paying the bill yet. So if you can spare little, we can still sure use it. Look for new photos of the waterers installed soon! Thank you everyone...your the best!

| #9 | Monday is the cut off for 2009 Health Reports! Please make sure to get them in on time, complete with a vet's signature and photos!
Lots going on with the program this week. Thanks to all of you we won the $1000.00 prize from Petfinder for the organization with the most votes last week.....great job everyone! No idea when that gets paid, but I'm sure it will get paid. Thank you to all of you that have voted and continue to vote. You got us that $1000.00!
You probably already saw that we got the waterlines and electric lines trenched in for the auto waterers this week. The yard is a major mess, but Karen and I will get the first waterer installed today, unless we run into problems, but it looks like it will be usable today. Tomorrow we will pour the concrete and install the second one. The frostless hydrant ais already hooked up and working and this project should be behind us this weekend yet. Then all that is left is to clean up the mess.
The latest fun auction ended on Wednesday evening and was a huge success. It raised a little over $4000.00 for the program! A huge thank you to everyone who either donated items or bid on items. $4000.00 is a great boost to this program with all the projects we are trying to get done all at the same time. Thank you!!
Karen and I actually decided to shut the program down for the weekend so we can get some things done around here without appointments and distractions. We need to get the waterers installed, get the parking lot back in order, get the lawn mowed and the weed eating done, clean a couple of stall, clean the house, clean Cakes and Gracy's paddock and run in and are working on getting a dozer out here to clean up the old hay and manure from over the winter that piled up where the horses eat their hay. Once we get all this done, we can move forward and start getting ready for the party on the 27th.
We hope you all come to the party. There will be a huge three pole tent set up with the band and food all under one big roof. There will be food, beer and entertainment with the band offering some kareokee between sets...should be entertaining. Hope you all can come join us!
Have a great weekend!

| #10 | The past few days has been a little frustrating actually. We are trying to keep things rolling smoothly here at the farm, but most of our time is being spent trying to collect payments from the last fun auction and trying to contact the few adopters who still have not submitted their yearly paperwork for their adopted horses. To me this is pathetic. There is no excuse for not having a health report in on time. We give each adopter 6 and 1/2 months to get them in. So when someone emails or calls back to say how busy they have been as their excuse....I shut right down. Nobody is too busy to send in their paperwork on time and very very few people are busier than we are. So that excuse is about as sad as it gets to us. I'll bet their electric and phone bills still get paid on time...plenty of time to do that. The simple fact is that the required paperwork is just not high on their priority list. So that makes me have to waste more of my time doing something I hate doing....being the bad guy and making it a priority in their lives. I would just as soon get some real work done and not have to play bad cop and get angry instead of babysitting a handful of adults that know better but want to dump their excuses as to why they can't get a vet to sign paperwork over a 6 and 1/2 month period. If I am talking about you, get your paperwork in. We will give a few days grace this year, but not much. At the end of the week these go to the attorney.
Enough of my spouting now....other things have been going well. Hopefully the concrete for the auto waterers has had enough time to cure now and I can get them going either today or tomorrow. We have a dozer scheduled to come out today to do some of our normal spring pasture clean up. Our parking lot is starting to look normal again. All we need is a couple loads of gravel dumped to cover the sand and clay from the trenching and that should be done. Next week we are going to get fun auction stuff mailed out and start getting ready for the party on Saturday.
The party....we hope you all can make it. The more the merrier. It's rain or shine and we will have a giant circus type tent set up with everything under one roof, so even bad weather shouldn't slow us down. Of course we are hoping for good weather though. The tent crew comes in on Friday afternoon to get that set up and we will update you all with more details as the we get closer to the party date. Gonna be fun! |

| #11 | Thursday already? Oh boy....have I got things to get done....in the rain!
Lots of folks have been calling this week and are probably finding it really hard to get in touch with us. We are doing our best to get back to everyone who calls, but haven't had the time for all the calls. This week we have a lot going on and we apologize if you have called and not gotten in touch with us. It's kind of project week here and when we are not inside working, we are outside working on those projects.
Yesterday was a particularly busy day....got up pretty early and did the email/website thing like every other morning. Went out to do chores at around 8:30am...didn't get back indoors until almost 8pm last night.
It started with the vet. We had an appointment to get Timely and Cocoa's Coggins done and also had to get Timely's blocked tear ducts opened. Once that was done I started working on the waterers and got the first one all hooked up and working. So yes, we have one of the waterers working now and hope to have the second one done today.
Karen then had to come back in and start her work day and I spent some time on the skidsteer finishing flattening our parking lot back out from the trenching we did for the waterers last week. About the same time the leveling was done, the dump trucks started to show up and dumped 36 yards of new gravel where the trenches were so we are not walking and driving on mud the rest of the year. As the trucks were dumping gravel, the bulldozer arrived. I got the gate opened and showed them what we needed done. Basically, we needed to plow all the old manure and hay from the winter into a giant pile away from the front of the pasture. We had them do that in each pasture. There's a familiar stink in the air today from all of that, but hopefully the smell will be gone by party day next weekend. When they got all the manure moved I had them help me spread all the new gravel quick before they left. Everyone was done a little after 7 pm and Karen and I did chores and came in to eat something. While we were throwing something quick together for supper we managed to squeeze in a few phone calls, ate, then passed out for the night on the couch. So here we are again.....back at it bright and early.
Today we both have to work, but before we get started I have to run into town to pick up a fitting for the last auto waterer. We also need one more load of gravel dumped. So, we will run into town, come home, Karen will start her work day, I will work for a few hours on my work day, then cut out early and get the last waterer hooked up and spread the last load of gravel. Hopefully tonight will be a little easier and quieter than last night and we will have a little less going on once the day starts to wind down.
Tomorrow is Friday, work, banking day, appointments and family is coming up for the weekend. Hope they like mud and manure....hehee. |

| #12 | Waterers are now in and no more mud and muck!!
Yes, you heard it right...after all these years, we now have auto waterers installed with horses drinking from them! Not only that, but we have 72 yards of fresh new gravel covering the entire back parking lot..so no more mud and clay to trudge through! We also had a dozer in this week and did some manure and old hay clean up.....what a mess, but glad it's behind us.
So now we can concentrate on the few health reports we still need to collect from a few adopters and the few people who still have not paid for their fun auction items, then we can start to put the party for next week together. What a couple of tiring weeks it has been. The party is exactly what the doctor ordered.
We are going to take it a little easier this weekend and so far only have 2 appoinments scheduled, so we should be able to get some of the loose ends finished and still have some time to kick back over the weekend.
Fun auction items that need to be mailed will go out next week. If you are coming to the party, then we will have your items here for you when you arrive. A few more hours and Karen and I are even done with our regular work until Monday......yeah!!
Have fun and see you all next Saturday!!!

| #13 | MHWF Inc. will be closed to the public from today, June 21st until Saturday June 27th. We will be open and available again next Saturday for the party.
We are taking this time to close down for a few days so that we can get a full weeks work in at our jobs, get the fun auction items boxed up and mailed, plus get everything ready for the party next weekend.
We will be available for emergencies, or for adopters who have questions or concerns regarding their adopted horses.
Thank you and see you all next weekend! |

| #14 | Wow, is it hot out or what? 92 degrees here with enough humidity to swim in! Hope your all doing ok out there in this heat. Take it easy and don't overwork yourself.
This may not be a big deal to people who do not smoke, but had to share it with all of you anyway. It has now been 25 hours since Karen or myself have had a cigarette. This past spring we ran into someone who told us about something called an E Cigarette. It's a small metal device that looks like a cigarette, but is actually a small atomizer that you put nicotine into. When you go to take a drag off of it, the atomizer kicks in, heats up the nicotine and you get a puff of nicotine and steam...no smoke, no tar, no smell, no ashes or lighters. This is supposed to be the new way to quit smoking and so far it is working like a charm. There are still some bad habits to break and we are just starting, but for us to go one day without a cigarette is a miracle. Eventually the idea is to taper back the nicotine until you no longer need or want the E Cigarette. I am a 2 pack a day person and have never even been able to get close to quitting even though my health is starting to show the wear and tear of smoking. So far this first 25 hours has been pretty easy and we are happy with the fact that we have not smoked since yesterday.
On another note, All the fun auction items went out in the mail today. There was a lot of packages this time around. The minivan was completely full of boxes. Most of you will have your items before the weekend. Thank you for such a successful fun auction this time around!
Don't forget the party here this Saturday. Everyone is welcome anytime after 5 pm. Bring an appetite...there is going to be a lot of food and drink. Bring your singing voice as well...kareokee. For more info on the party this weekend, make sure to check out the thread about the party pinned right near the top of the forum.
Time to sign off for the night.....the heat really zaps the energy in a hurry, olus we are getting hungry and it's time to make some supper. Take care!

| #15 | Well, it's the start of day 4 without a cigarette for Karen and I. Still going strong and so far so good.
Tomorrow is the big party here and we are almost ready now. All that's left is to pick up the ice, the buns and the 1/2 barrels of beer, plus a little set up in the tent. But other than that, we are ready. This should be fun!
Please do not let the weather forcast scare you away this weekend. The humidity is supposed to be way down finally and it is supposed to be cloudy, so the temps will be much nicer. I know they are calling for rain and maybe even a storm, but don't let that bother you. Everything is under cover and we have plenty of room. So the weather should be a non-factor tomorrow other than this tormenting heat will be gone, thankfully.
We also have to ask a few things in regard to the party tomorrow. Please do not show up early as we will not be ready for anyone until 5 pm. Before that we will have our own chores and showers to take and a few last minute things to do, so please feel free to come any time after 5pm, but please do not show up early.
We also wanted to remind everyone that this is a party and not a horsie day. We have to ask that everyone attending the party tomorrow please stay out of the horse's pastures. There will be a lot going on, lots of sounds and excitement and there are a few horses in the pastures that are trying to adjust to new surroundings, plus people will be drinking. So we have to ask that everyone stay out of the pastures during the party this weekend. The house will also be locked, but that is ok. We have a very clean porta-potty and everything we will need will be available outside.
As you have probably read on the forum, Baby and Gracie graduated from the front paddock that they have been living in for close to a year, to the big pasture with the rest of the herd. There's some adjustment there for them, but so far so good and we think that by the weekend they will feel right at home with the rest of the herd.
So that's about it for today....the tent people should be here any minute and we will be pretty close to ready within a few more hours. See you all tomorrow!

| #16 | What a couple of weeks it has been. Lots of projects, the party this past Saturday, fun auctions, health reports, you name it. It looks like pretty soon it is finally going to slow down and just be about horses again and to be honest, that will be nice. The pace of the past few weeks has been frantic and we are tired. It will be nice to show a few horses and get back to doign what this program is designed to do. Before we know it, summer will be gone, so it's good to be a little ahead of the game this year.
Chocolata will be heading for her surgery very soon and we will update you all on that. The party this past Saturday was a blast and we really enjoyed all the great company we had over the weekend. I won't go into too much detail about the party here, since it has it's own thread where we will post some pics soon.
Let's see, what else do we have? Oh yes, tonight at 6:30 pm will mark exactly one week since Karen or I have had a cigarette! Wow, that was pretty easy so far and we both feel quite a bit better already.
Most of the summer projects for around the farm are done for the season which is great. I guess now we can concentrate on adopting horses and getting back to a more "normal" life.
Thanks everyone....talk to you again soon!

| #17 | As I type they are finally taking the big tent down from the party this past Saturday. The porta-potty guy is cleaning the ourdoor toilet and life is starting to look a little more normal today. The last of the fun auction items got shipped out and are on their way to the few people who are still waiting for their items. With all this behind us and automatic waterers in, what are we going to do with all our extra time...hehehe. It sure will be nice to have a little extra time now and then. It's really been a busy year so far.
Last night was one full week since Karen or I smoked a cigarette....so far so good. It seems our ability to quit with the E Cigarette has been inspiring quite a few others to do the same. Not only are we proud that we made it through our first week, but we are also really happy that this is helping other people to try it as well. What a great feeling.
Some of you may have read on our forum that there was a stray horse picked up in our neighborhood last night. Well, it is now officially impounded by the county and will be here tomorrow. We will update once that happens. The TV stations are already calling to run the story...gee whiz....the hrose isn't even here yet. Oh well....soon.
We are down to the last hanful of health reports to either collect or take action on....not too bad. Pastures are holding up, horses are all doing really well and we are close to getting Chocolata in for her surgery soon.
The rest of the day should be a pretty easy one. All we have left is another hour or two of our work day, chores then some time to catch up on our sleep and maybe watch a movie tonight. The 4th of July is this Saturday and we will have to figure out what we want to do that day....maybe nothing...heheehe.
Take care and talk to you all tomorrow.
PS. If anyone knows how to find Mr. Marnix Stamps, please get in touch with us. Thank you!

Karen: I am not sure if Scott wanted to update this thread or not, but I gave myself a few minutes to catch up on the forum here this morning, so I will give a short update since he is out with a horse supplement rep at the moment.
The mare has been picked up and is gone. Just to summarize this, the first person that called about the mare claiming ownership eventually admitted it wasn't her mare (all the while these folks all thought it was a gelding and not a mare), but we found that the person who did eventually pick the mare up here had put this person up to calling about the horse for him. Not really sure why, but can speculate. So, we had the man who claimed this mare as his come to the farm to identify her the evening before last, all the while stating that he bought this mare and it was his. By instruction of the county, we told him that he needed to produce a Coggins for the horse. He left irate regarding that, and not without throwing a "tantrum". Then last evening we had a truck and trailer pull into the driveway unannounced and had a man get out of the truck that we've never seen before saying he was here to pick up an Arab mare. Then the original man claiming ownership also got out of the truck. Scott reminded him of the paperwork from the county and what he needed to produce in order to take the mare. He said that he talked to the humane officer and she told him to come and get the mare. So, knowing that the humane officer would have notified us of this, we called her and put her on the phone with him (she had not told him that). So this man now says that the man driving the truck and trailer is the person who owns the mare. Then the man driving the trailer says he does not own the mare, but names yet another person, who is not present. They do produce a Coggins and upon instruction of the county via telephone at that point we are instructed to load the mare and let them on their way since they do have the digital Coggins. I had asked numerous times if we could buy the mare and I got the answer from both of these men separately at first that this was not their horse, they couldn't sell it to me. (by the way, the man who originally claimed the mare and was here with the man driving the truck paid $100.00 for the mare, he did purchase this mare). (Karen now ran out of forum time and handed this update off to Scott to finish)
Scott: Ok, I guess I will finish. So, being instructed to give him this mare, we headed for the barn as I said "Let's go get your horse and get you loaded up". As we walked into the barn I asked if he would reconsider selling the mare. The response I got was exactly this....." I would not sell any horse to a %$#@ scumbag like you". Hmmmm....are you wondering my reaction? Let's just say that about 1/100th of a second passed before I was spitting mad and in his face with my finger poking into his face and chest rather angrily, which sent Karen into the house very quickly to call the police. Upon my recommendation to the "Commandant" that he should watch his mouth and while he was here on our property he would act like a "big boy" or he could leave and get a court order to come get his horse. That's when he said let's go out to the road and settle this right now.
Not being a fan of prison for killing an old man I got smart and went to the house until the officers arrived. There were 2 county officers, a state officer and the Humane Officer. We stood around for about 1/2 hour or so while the officials asked him questions, called him out on his lies and scolded him for poor care, ever-changing stories and a few other things. He really showed his true colors for the officers while he was here and the "Commandant" had another one of his episodes.
When all was said and done, he was instructed to contact his vet and was told there would be follow up on the care of this mare. We loaded her up and they left. The reality of it was that although this horse jockey is a liar and a generally unlikable person, he hadn't really broken any serious laws, so hands were tied and the horse left last night. Wish we could say she went to a good home, but we don't want to lie to you.
Something both Karen and I want to add to this situation is that we are pretty damn sick of the "good ole' boys" club, the liars, horse jockeys and crooks. We aren't playing nice anymore. The times are changing and the rest of the horse world is going to bowl right over and through them. So if they want to lie, cheat, steal , neglect and abuse their animals, watch the hell out...because their time has passed and the rest of us true horse people are done with them and will no longer tolerate them. Well, after this unpleasant mess we headed into town to take Karen's sister Vicki out for Chinese for her Birthday. Ate, and headed to LaCrosse to go see Great White at Riverfest. The show started at 10:30 pm and went until Midnight. We got there about 20 minutes late, but did get to see the rest of the show and got to meet Mark Kendall, their guitar player after the show. We had a nice conversation with him and talked about the first time I met him way back in the 80's when both us us were younger and had much longer hair. After talking with Mark we headed out and got home around 2:30am.....passed out in the livingroom and here we are this morning, working and looking like Zombies. No plans for the weekend as of yet. Here are a couple quick snapshots of Great White from last night. Attached Images:

| #19 | It's been a few days since either of us posted here, mainly because there hasn't been much going on with the holiday weekend and the nice weather....who wants to spend it online?
So, last time we left off, we had gone to see Great White on Thursday. Lots of catching up on sleep on Friday. We did go to a friends house and did a photo shoot of her horses for her, grabbed a burger and came back home to finish catching up on our sleep.
On Saturday we did chores, ran into town for a new battery for the truck, came home, put the new battery in, ate lunch and did afternoon chores before getting ready to go to the fireworks in Marshfield. We always bring the truck to the fireworks. The flatbed is a great way to get above all the people and cars, plus we can go early, set up the cooler and lawn chairs on the bed of the truck and kick back for a while. Karen H and Joanie S. came along and we met some friends there. We all watched the fireworks together then went to Pizza Hut for a late night supper.
Sunday, kind of more of the same. We did chores, hung around here most of the day then went out to the lake and fished for a couple of hours....didn't catch anything. Got home around 9 or so and watched a movie before calling it a day.
Monday, back to work of course. Karen did her regular work thing, I did a few hours of website work for a new site I got hired to do. When I was done I tore the lawnmower apart, ran into town for new blades, put them on and mowed the lawn. By then it was already getting late, we made supper and watched another late night movie.
That brings us to today....more of the same...work, chores, and we are just getting in from the pasture for the night. I'll finish typing this, make supper and we will watch a little TV before going to bed....a couple pretty boring days, but a nice change of pace for those couple of days. Usually it's so busy around here we barely have time to sit down and almost never get supper made before 10pm. So this little break was nice, but we are ready to get back into the swing of things again. Hopefully adoptions will pick back up again soon. We have some really nice horses here at the moment.
I have a few things to add, but I will save it all for tomorrow. Right now we are hungry and thinking more about making supper than anything else. Catch you all tomorrow.
Thanks!

| #20 | Ok, we are back and as promised I will add a few more things other than the boring self-indulgent tediousness of my last few posts. I doubt anyone wants to here that we watched a movie and ate supper. Sorry, it's just been so slow here the past few days that there just wasn't much to tell.
Even on a slow day there is still a lot going on behind the scenes though. We set a time to get Chocolata in for her surgery sometime around the 3rd week in July. Nancy M. was kind enough to volunteer to either pick her up once she is ready to come home, or to bring her down there for us. That will help a lot....thank you Nancy M! We originally planned on bringing her to Fond du Lac for the surgery, but when we called back to work out the details, the price we were originally quoted and the time she needed to stay there for her rehab was quite a bit more. That's when someone emailed me about Lodi Vet Clinic and how they were happy with their work on the same kind of surgery. We spoke with them the next morning and will be taking Chocolata to Lodi instead. They have done many of these surgeries and their price was about the same as we originally thought this was going to cost. Let's just hope the surgery goes well. The biggest risk is of the horse bleeding out and for the first 5 days after the surgery the horse cannot be allowed to lay down for fear of pressure causing them to bleed to death. It's rare though and in most cases these go pretty smoothly.
Sad to say there are still a handful of people who have still not turned in their 2009 Health Reports. Our attorney gets back from vacation today and we are forced to file a claim with one adopter who after being served papers from the attorney giving her 15 days to get her paperwork in, still opted not to send it in. That leaves us little in the way of options and we are going to be forced to take it to court and will have to remove the horse. Sad that someone would waste their own time as well as ours in something so stupid. Simply because they don't feel the need to file their paperwork they would rather fight it out in court, only to lose the case and the horse in the end. We will most likely post the details on who and which horse in a few days once we know it is filed and public record.
Well, Monday night marked two full weeks since Karen or I have had a cigarette. So far so good and neither of us see going back to smoking as an option. Our sense of taste and smell is coming back now and we generally feel quite a bit better lately. My smokers cough is completely gone and neither of us gets winded as easily as when we were each smoking 2 packs a day. Plus, boy are we saving money!
Since we do not have a fun auction going on and we are done collecting donations for Chocolata's surgery, it's that dreaded time of the year again....they Hay Drive. As much as we detest the Hay Drive, it is easily the most important fundraiser we do each year. Without it we would be dead in the water. So, we are going to try for an early start this year and hopefully will be able to keep the number down a bit from previous years simply by securing the hay earlier and at a lower price. So please keep your eyes and ears open for the Hay Drive which will start very soon. Eveyr penny in that fund counts and although it's a long road to the end, it is the lifeline for this program and as important as it gets.
Last but not least, we are running out of time for the online voting contest....please make sure to vote each and every day until the end of the contest. If I remember right, we only have 18 days left! Please pass the word of the contest on and please vote each day.
Thank you!

| #22 | Saturday already.....and we have a clean slate for the day, no appointments, no plans.....kind of nice. We do have a couple of appointments set for Sunday and that will be nice too.
It's been since Wednesday since we posted here. Not a whole lot new since then. Applications are coming in and things seem to be picking back up now that the holiday is over and most people are done making hay for a while.
Thursday we did afternoon chores after work then ran into WI Rapids for Chinese food. Stopped at the IGA on the way home and fell asleep trying to watch a movie.....neither of us got to see the end.
So, Friday, more of the same..work and chores. In the afternoon I ran into town for senior feed for DJ, picked up Whoppers for a late lunch and brought them home. After work we went out to do chores and got ready for some trimming and shoeing. Randy and Kathy came out at around 5 and we managed to get Holli trimmed and shod and got another 6 or 7 horses trimmed right away as well. Since Randy and I now have bad backs, Kathy and Karen caught horses and brought them up, Randy did the actual trimming and I did all the rasping. That worked pretty nice because nobody got worked to death and we got quite a bit done. Once the sun set it poured rain for about 1/2 hour and when it stopped, the mosquitoes came out in full force and we called it quits there.
We got in the house around 9 or so, returned a few phone calls and reheated left over Chinese food, popped in the movie we didn't get to finish the night before and made it all the way to the end. Got up pretty early this morning and worked for a while. We will be heading outside to do chores in a bit....no idea what the rest of the day has in store, but kind of nice not to have plans for once...
Enjoy your weekend....weather is looking good.

| #23 | Wow, these are boring (insert yawning smiley here). Oh, hi Dan! Anyway, I'm sure I won't make this any more exciting whatsoever, but I think I better hop on here once and a while. I find it interesting that Scott calls any time outside with the horses "chores" and never elaborates on any of that. I guess it's a lucky thing he is doing most of these updates or mine would get very tedious going on about the details of what horse did what and who got worked with and exactly what we did each day. I guess I will just say that it has been so much fun to get up and go out in the morning to do chores and find Gracie and Baby Cakes still laying down sleeping with DJ standing watch over them, then calling them to come up and having them all excited to see us and come running up. That is my favorite part of morning chores at the moment. Of course all three get lots of extra attention in the morning. Evening chores also always include lots of Cakes, Gracie and DJ time as well as daily routine. I am so proud of how well the girls are doing, and DJ too. The girls were a blessing for him to get him out and acclimated in the herd and feeling important. I will keep horse updates on the horse's threads, but just had to add what an important part of morning chores those three are. It is so amazing to see the transformation of the two girls from two little horses who were so afraid of people to two beautiful horses who love people so much. DJ's transformation has been equally as amazing and he is such a happy old gentleman.
Now I must be an odd one, because doing farrier work on a Friday night was just as enjoyable as anything else I can think of. Scott mentioned that we did some farrier work last night and I thought I'd just end here on a couple snapshots from the evening. I didn't have my big camera out with me and wasn't doing photos or anything, but did manage to snap a couple of quickies with the baby camera. Here are Chrystal and Doc on trimming evening.
Chrystal was absolutely perfect for her trim (and of course the dogs looking for some trimming treats)

Doc was a good boy too, and was very patient being tied for a while at the hitching post

Well, we do have appointments on Sunday which is wonderful, but I also want to go to a local horse show, something I rarely ever find the time to do. Hopefully I can find the time to get over there after the appointments. I've run out of time here and won't make this any longer. Have a great weekend everyone! |

| #24 | Well, it's Wednesday already. Where does the time go......
We had an appointment tonight and had a couple of adoptions. Tonight Sammy and Holli got adopted. They went to a good home and the best part is that it is only a few miles away. Tomorrow night Karen and I will deliver them to their new home. Adoptions are always good news.
Not sure what the heck I did to my ankle, but tonight I can barely put any weight on it. I don't remember twisting it or banging it on anything, but this one is a bugger...throbbing and swelling. I am getting old or what? Now I can get hurt just walking apparently...the first sign of old age.....hehee.
We also had something Else strange happen tonight and something I have never seen before. We opted to pull Star out of the pasture to spend a little time with him tonight. We thought it would be nice to get familiar with him again, he's such a sweet guy. Well, we tied him to the hitching post and walked about 40 feet away to go turn DJ back out with the herd after eating his supper. On the way back Ben and Star were calling out to each other and getting each other worked up. Well Star decided that the smart move would be to jump over the hitching post (which is 54 inches tall by the way)...this is a 20 year old horse mind you. He was tied pretty darn short so we didn't think much of it. But, somehow he managed to get 1/2 of his body over the hitching post. In trying to get the rest of his body over, he quickly realized that he head was still tied to the rail. So, when he went over, his body went over, but his head did not.....this caused him to do a full back flip over the hitching post. He flipped over, upside down with his head tied to the rail. His back went up and over and landed on the 2 x 12 rails of the paddock, breaking them in half and bending a wooden 4 x 4 post up and out of the ground.....quite a scene. Somehow Star came out of this without so much as a scratch. I cannot say the same for the paddock. It's going to take a little money and some time to replace and repair. Neither Karen or myself have ever seen anything like it before. What gets into these horses heads sometimes is beyond me. At least he was not hurt, but my guess is that he won't try anything that stupid again....he kind of freaked himself out for a minute there.
So what else is new.....hmmm....the calls to donate horses are coming in left and right. The problem is that we can't help them all and right now we are turning down about 8 horses or more a day. Adoptions are still there, but seem to have slowed down a bit as well. There seems to be a flood of people calling and emailing about adopting that do not have an application on file. Not sure what that is about. It's pretty clear on our site that the application comes first, but the calls still seem to keep coming in. Hopefully some of the people calling send in their applications. The more the merrier.
I also realized today that we never put Timely or Cocoa on the adoption horses page. No idea how that slipped by us, but it did and I will have to get them up there soon. Cocoa is looking pretty good now. Timely just isn't gaining the weight back and it's probably time to float her teeth. We'll get that done soon and it should speed up the process quite a bit. The past couple of weeks has been so busy with this and that...in the next week or two we should have time to get some more updates rolling on a few of the horses. Looks like Sundance is coming back here on Saturday as well. You all have seen his progress with Holly, so if your looking for a good little pony with a great start, he will be back and available this weekend. Thank you for all your hard work Holly! Don't think that all of us haven't noticed the good job you have done with him....we have and appreciate it a lot.
I guess I'll call it a night tonight and get my ankle up for a while. Hopefully by tomorrow it will be close to normal again. In the meantime, please do not forget to vote in the online contest...only 2 weeks left....and please consider donating to the Hay Drive. It's off to a really really slow start and we need all the help we can get. If we fail at everything else we do, the Hay Drive is the one thing we MUST accomplish or we are going to be in real trouble. So whatever you can spare, some people a dollar, some people more....we can sure use your help.
Have a good night and take care!

| #25 | Thursday night and just catching up on a few emails before making supper and sitting for a bit in front of the TV.
We did deliver the horses that got adopted yesterday to their new home tonight. That was pretty uneventful and went well. It's only about 15 miles aways so no big deal to drop them off. The kids were all really excited and I am sure we will see pics soon. Everyone settled in pretty quickly and once they did we headed back home. From there we went down to the lake for an hour or so....too cold and windy...came back home pretty early. The lake is only 11 miles away, so that's nice. We also have Lake Dexter about 15 minutes away in the other direction. We manage to get to each one about 1/2 dozen times a year for short little breaks, fishing and even once in a while camping for a night or two.
So we got in about an hour or so ago and returned a few phone calls before hopping online to write this, catch up on some emails and get a little of our regular paying job work done. There is always some of that to do...just wish the pay was better..heehe.
So no plans for supper tonight and had to go digging in the freezer to see what we could find hiding in the back.....a bag of shrimp. So it looks like supper is pretty simple tonight, some cold shrimp and cocktail sauce along with an episode of Deadliest Catch. We love Deadliest Catch and end up watching it quite a bit. I'm a Phil and Cornelia Maria fan....we like Sig and the Northwestern too. If you don't watch the show, you won't get this. If you do watch it, then you will absolutely get it.
So, the rest of the night should be easy going and pretty quiet. Karen's brother and sister in law are up from Texas this weekend and we plan to meet them for some Italian tomorrow night some time. We haven't seen them in a couple of years now, since they moved back here from Sweden.
I have all my website stuff done for the night now, or at least close enough and Karen just told me she is signing out of work for the night, so it looks like it's shrimp and Deadliest Catch time.....catch you all again soon.
