Great pictures. Doc is one heck of a horse, sounds like it's a great match.

Great photo! Doc has found his match and, Eric, you found yourself an awesome horse!

What a great picture!  Good grief...How tall is Eric?  LOL!  Doc looks very comfortable with everything there.  I am totally stumped by his bucking issues/naughtiness...I had hit the same wall with him and realized I was in over my head.  I did do a lot of ground work with him and the trainer after he bucked with me and did get on him a couple times after but didn't really "ride" him. Just sat and let him chill and relax.  I'm sure the trainer could have some further insight or ideas.   I'm sure Eric will do great with him!  :-)

Thanks again to all!

That probably would have been good info to have before we put someone on his back.....

Scott, you're so pickey   As tall as Eric is, I envision him "walking" along with the horse anyway... kind of like an adult sitting on a pony.  Doc's 15 hands for pity sake!  I couldn't get my arm around his back, let alone around his neck.  When I first saw the picture, I was sure he was standing on something!  When I saw the full picture on Tana's link, I was shocked!  Just how tall are you Eric?

So sorry there seems to have been a miscommunication...  I thought I had described everything about him in my initial e-mails and when I dropped him off. :-(  I certainly did not mean to mislead anyone.  I know I did say that he had dumped me because I think you (Scott) commented (jokingly I hope) that "He bucked you off once so you're getting rid of him?"  Not trying to be argumentative, it certainly was my intention to disclose everything about him as that's in everyone's best interest.  Please feel free to e-mail me privately if you have concerns...I want this to work out for all involved, especially Doc.  Thanks...

No problem at all Angie.  We just weren't expecting the rodeo out of Doc that he performed for us.  Lots of young horses will buck once in a while, and from the descriptions and pics we were just not expecting the extent that Doc took that.  Although he had been basically sitting idle here and not been worked...and he's young.   Eric has a very good understanding and training skills and he is going to basically start from the ground up and try to work this out.  No worries at all.

No worries about the bucking.  He seemed a little out of sorts from the get go.  That is the problem with a young horse, without constant work he will forget easily.  I knew that he would probably blow up, since he did it with just a saddle on before I got on him.  He will just need to relearn a few things.  I am looking forward to getting him, where I know he can be.  We will be chasing and roping cows before you know it.

Eric had a good read on Doc before he got on...that's why he scored a perfect 10 on the landing!

Seriously though, Doc's in great hands!!!

Any landing you can walk away from and still want to adopt the horse is definitely a 10!!!!!

OK, now I can see why Angie (and her hubby) fell in love with Doc. I hadn't worked with him at all (aside from putting on a fly mask and leading him to and from the pasture), but last night I took him out to the round pen just to work on sacking out stuff. Angie, he has the most expressive eyes! You're right--he really does try to be "strong" and be a good boy, but like Eric told me, he almost gets "scared stiff." I used things from my "desensitizing tub"---swimming noodle, rain jacket, kids' music toys, etc. His whole body is tense and reacts, but the only thing that made him back away was a noisy "clacker." I fell in love w/ him more watching him work so hard--I'd let him sniff the objects and then hug on him while I rubbed them on his side or whatever. He'd settle down and I ended on a positive note. Angie, he crossed things better than Tana and our yearling colt--he walked on a board w/ no troubles (the other horses all wanted to jump it!) and a tarp. Afterwards, I grabbed an apple from our tree and he worked on that thing for several minutes, trying to get ahold of it Eric is doing well w/ him and mentioned yesterday, "I'm looking forward to getting on him again!" He works w/ him everyday for about 45 min. A couple of days ago it was another "rodeo"--he put a rope around his cinch area and Doc blew up--running fast and jumping. But yesterday he was calm and Eric actually lead him around by the rope in that same area. He's making progress and we'll just keep it up 'til you visit and come trail riding w/ us ... just give us a little while!

Eric got on Doc today!!! They've been working hard in the round pen and taking walks down our trails--the last bit of their session today, he sat on the saddle and asked Doc to take a few steps. So far, so good! When he's nervous, Doc usually freezes or bucks w/ the saddle on and thankfully it was a "freeze" day. Eric will have me ask Doc to move tomorrow while he rides in the round pen. Fingers crossed that we're at a turning point w/ the boy. It's amazing how sensitive that horse is even when grooming, with one hand resting on him, he just quivers every time the brush comes in contact. We have a long way to go, but Eric's still confident and has such hope for Doc. I'll let y'all know how it goes! p.s. Tana and I ride our 15 miler a week from today! woooo hoooo

It's so great to hear that he's doing so well, and that Eric is willing to put the time in to have it go right. Good luck with Tana next week too!

That's wonderful news Christie!  We'll have our fingers crossed for you for today's ride.
You'll have to let us all know how you and Tana do on the big ride next week, and we all wish you the best of luck!!!!
Thanks a bunch for the great update Christie.

Good to hear about the progress, and you saying that Doc is super sensitive to touch made me think of something. I remember reading in Linda Tellington-Jones book about horses that are ticklish and just in general being very sensitive to touch. He might really benefit from some touch desensitizing, and T-Touch massage. Especially around his belly and flank area, he might be super sensitive to touch there. Just a thought.

Well, Eric rode for a bit before Doc decided to buck... And I MISSED IT! They were doing pretty well walking around the pen, so I went to check on the burn pile. I turned around and Eric was standing on the ground--I looked at him curiously and he hollered from across the yard, "You missed it! I actually held on for almost a whole circle worth of bucking!" Bummer! (for me, him and Doc) BUT he's not deterred--he plans on riding Doc everyday this week w/ the present techniques (Buck Brannamen--sp?) and will then reassess. Hopefully it'll be just enough time to get Doc settled into having someone in that saddle . Fingers crossed! Christie

Oww...too bad you missed that Christie!    But that is too bad....hopefully things will come around soon, and thank you both so much for your patience and understanding with Doc.

Love Buck Brannaman!  He would have been on our agenda for our next Expo if we had one...he was definitely on the list.

Doc will be so worth it. I know with you two he will become a fantastic horse someday. I was so impressed that when you came for him and Eric got bucked off, and Eric just shook it off and said he wanted him. Then, as a wife that just saw her husband get bucked off, you even impressed me more by agreeing with Eric that you should adopt him. It was great that you both saw potential in Doc and were willing to give him a chance. It will take time, but I do believe in you two.

Good luck as you continue to work with and get to know Doc and Tana!

Hopefully persistance will be the key for Eric and Doc.  Kudos for Eric for sticking in there, as well as sticking ON there, too...smile...

Keep us posted, will be hoping for a dramatic breakthrough for Doc.

Hooray! Eric has ridden Doc the past 3 days w/ NO rodeo action... The first couple of days, Doc didn't move much, just small circles. But yesterday E took him out of the round pen, down our trail! Yehaw! They're making progress The pics I took didn't work, so I'll try again another day. Happy Columbus day, Christie
