| #1 | Exerpt from my blog I thought we could all relate too:
My sister was irked with me the other day because I fit into a pair of jeans that she has "outgrown". LOL She was furious because as she puts it, "I eat what I want and don't even have to exercise." I responded with the fact that I ride horses and she said that wasn't exercise, the horses do all the work. Hmmm.... perhaps I should put her on my horse and have her long trot down the road for 3 miles or so. HA! That is a good burn in the old legs, huh. So on Saturday when I woke up I paid more attention to the "exercise" I am not getting. It started with chores, I hauled hay and water to 2 paddocks and then worked a colt in the round pen for a while. Nope, no exercise there, so why was I so darn hot and had to take off my jacket? Then I threw hay down for the week and stacked it, exercise? I think not. Next I had two run ins to shovel out. Shucks, this can't possibly be exercise right? Then the husband asks if I am ready to start our wood hauling process. He had spent 5 hours cutting wood on Friday, so we headed to the woods to throw it in the wagon and haul it home. Climbing around on the hillside carrying logs to and from a trailer and then lifting them over my head to put in the trailer. Pfft! Nothing like exercise. When we finally got the loads home and unloaded (and throwing the wood off the trailer was NOT exercise) it was then time to split and haul it to the house to stack or haul it to the garage to stack. I must have made a million trips back and forth from the splitter. Five hours of wood hauling later I was disappointed to realize I hadn't even exercised yet! Then it was out across the 10 acre pasture and back to catch some horses that needed to have burrdocks picked out of their mane and tail. But that isn't exercise either, darn it. Because to some people, you aren't exercising if you aren't walking in place, going nowhere on a treadmill or stairmaster. I prefer my exercise regimen. I get to be outside, I get things accomplised AND I'm doing it with my family. Doing it "country style". Have a great day! |

| #5 | Too funny! I love it! I wish I worked as hard as you on most days. Maybe that is why I need to exercise.
I lost 33 pounds this spring/summer by counting the calories I eat and using a Heart Rate Monitor to determine how many calories I burn during exercise. This was very useful to help set goals and achieve them! The bad news is I started slacking in August and haven't stuck to my daily goals for way too long. This week I started again hoping I can lose the last 30 pounds by next summer.
After reading this I was inspired to look up how many calories one would burn by horseback riding. Here is what I found.
A 155 pound person who rides for one hour general horseback riding would burn 281 calories.
A 155 pound person who rides for one hour trotting horseback riding would burn 457 calories.
A 155 pound person who rides for one hour walking horseback riding would burn 176 calories.
If anyone has ever counted calories before they know that every calorie counts whether eating it or working it off.
At my peak in my weight loss I would jog/walk for an hour and burn 600 calories. This week starting back up I am happy to do 30 - 40 minutes exercise videos and burn around 300 calories.
I have never wore my heart rate monitor while riding or counted those lost because I thought it was too fun to count. More like an added bonus. The real added bonus was being able to mount with out too much trouble.
Being a horse owner has all those extra added bonuses we never thought of when we got into it! Burn calories burn!!! |

I love it when we visit my "city" relatives in Milwaukee who ALL belong to different fitness clubs/gyms and see their "results" from paying to exercise. I'm proud of my country exercise but they don't seem to get it when you talk to them about it--I to wish they would just spend a week or weekend at our "fitness club" and finally see some results. |

A couple years ago my employer had a exercise challenge. We formed teams and were allowed to count various types of exercise. I counted some horseback riding and was told, "That's not exercise. Only the horse is getting a workout." I told them how I rode bareback while walking, trotting, loping, and galloping (not to mention hot walking) I challenged anyone to "Come out and ride with me, the way I am riding....and then see if you still think it is not exercise. Well,I got no takers and was allowed to count my riding for my team. |

| #8 | I agree with Cindy....I have a sister in law who works out every week at the YMCA and I am not seeing any positive results???? Maybe I should hand her a muck bucket and shovel and direct her to the paddock.
All I know is....I really ENJOY my exercises of mucking and riding....they can have the gym and YMCA!
